CLAREMONT, Calif., July 2 (AScribe Newswire) -- ''The Color Midnight Made,'' a novel by Pomona College Lecturer Andrew Winer being released in early July, is receiving acclaim from Publisher's Weekly and Bookpage Reviews, and is a July/August pick of BookSense, a selection made by the association of independent bookstores across the country.
The novel is Winer's first and is published by Washington Square Press/Simon & Schuster 2002. His original screenplay entitled ''Honky!'' written with two partners, was purchased by New Regency and Fox. David Arquette is currently set for the title role.
At Pomona, one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges, Winer teaches Introduction to Creative Writing: Fiction. Other top writers connected to the college's English Department include David Foster Wallace, who joins the faculty beginning with the 2002-03 academic year as the Roy Edward Disney Professor of Creative Writing; film director and screenwriter Salvador Carrasco the 2002 Moseley Fellow; Robert Mezey, poet in residence and professor of English emeritus; and Janet Fitch, the 2001 Moseley fellow.
Winer's novel, ''The Color Midnight Made,'' is the story of a curious and passionate white, boy named Conrad Clay growing up in a depressed, primarily black, naval community in the San Francisco Bay area and is based largely on the author's own childhood. In her review, former professor Fitch says, ''Andrew Winer writes wicked funny prose. His ear for dialogue is pitch-perfect. Every sentence is a surprise and a delight.'' The opening paragraph draws the reader into Clay's world. ''They say I can't see colors. They're lying. I can see colors in people. Moms is yellow. Pops is camouflage. Our teacher Mr. Garabedian is tan like a weed. I got a color for everybody. Except me.''
Winer is beginning a five-state book tour that begins locally, on July 8, at Dutton's bookstore in Brentwood and includes several Southern California locations. (For a complete listing of tour dates, visit the website for The Color Midnight Made at www.andrewwiner.com.)
Raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Winer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master of Fine Arts in painting at Cal Arts. He also earned a Master Fine Arts at highly acclaimed University of California, Irvine program in Fiction.
